Tetris Game Boy nail art!

Earlier this week, Nintendo Power announced it would cease publication in December 2012. I’m a little bummed since video game mags were a big part of my childhood, so I did up a little manicure last night to pay tribute to the good ol’ days of Nintendo.

This is three coats of Inglot 138 (the closest colour I had to that spinach hue of the Game Boy screen) with the Tetris stamp from Vivid Lacquer plate VL 002. The accent nail is two coats of China Glaze Recycle with the D-pad controller drawn in with black Kiss nail stripe polish and the A and B buttons dotted on with a nail dotter and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Rapid Red.

In other, but related, news– I collaborated with my web partner over at Soap in the Bathroom, the 80s and 90s nostalgia site we co-run, on an awesome Nintendo Power retrospective. If that’s your thing, be sure to check it out!

Frankenstein’s Monster Halloween Manicure

This was my manicure from last Halloween, inspired by YouTuber GoldieStarling. It’s weird to look at since my nails are usually a bit longer now and more squared-off.

Instead of putting Frankenstein’s Monster on all of my nails, I just did on the accent/ring finger so it wasn’t overkill. This was done with Sally Hansen Insta-Dry in Mint Sprint, and Kiss stripe polish in white and black. The eyes were done with different sized nail dotting tools, which you can pick up at Sally’s or on ebay like I did.

A friend of mine had her baby shower on Halloween, costume optional, but there was a lot of Halloween decorations and candy. I thought it was a great manicure to wear to the shower since I didn’t dress up but still wanted to be a bit festive.

I’ve been slimed! Ghostbusters Hallowe’en manicure!

Ghostbusters is one of my all-time favourite movies and what better way to pay homage to the film than painting up my nails with Slimer?

Ingredients:

-Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Whirlwind White
-Nicole by OPI Razzle Dazzler
-Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Lickety-Split Lime
-Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Rapid Red
-Sally Hansen Hard As Nails in Solar Crème
-Ardene in Berry Gossip
-Claire’s Mood Polish in Fabulous/Funky
-Kiss stripe polish in White
-Kiss stripe polish in Black

I painted all my white except for my ring finger, which I painted black. Using red polish and a dotting tool, I made two small “no ghosts” logos on a sandwich baggie. I thought the polish would peel right off, but it didn’t so I just used manicure scissors to cut the design out. I put down a layer of top coat and placed the homemade decal on top.

The rest of my fingers have “slime” dripping down—I just freehanded this with a Slimer green nail polish and a dotting tool.

Finally, the thumbs feature Slimer himself! This was a bit difficult to do. I’ve never put on a decal this large so it’s bunched up in a couple areas, but it’s not too bad. Here I used the sandwich baggie technique again and started by putting down the green in Slimer’s body, followed by yellow and black for the eyes. I used pink, red, and burgundy for the mouth and dotted on a couple teeth. I went over the outlines with black polish using a small artist paint brush that I had in my art supply stash. Did the same method as the “no ghosts” logo and then sealed everything up with more topcoat.

I think it turned out pretty well for the first time doing something like this. It’s definitely my most advanced piece of nail art yet, haha!

I hope you guys enjoyed this manicure! And I hope you enjoy Ghostbusters because it is awesome!

Red and Black Nail Art

I was in the mood for something dramatic and red, so I did up this manicure the other day.

This is two coats of my favourite red, OPI Off with her Red from their Alice in Wonderland collection, and Kiss black stripe polish. On the ring finger accent nail is a black rose courtesy of Konad plate M13 (Hallowe’en plate… so excited I’ll get to use this more soon!) and Konad special black polish.

I like Off with her Red because it’s more of an orange toned red, a tomato red, than a berry pink red. The other reds in my collection all seem to look more pink on me than anything. What are some of your favourite reds?
