The Quest for a Rimmel Mania Dupe

The Scholarly Nail just posted Pure Ice Heartbreaker over Revlon Royal, which reminded me that I’ve had this sitting in my drafts for a while! So without further adieu… this manicure started out as OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaker on top. After doing that up, I noticed it had that special glowy look reminiscent of Rimmel Mania, a gorgeous deep green-blue duochrome. This got me thinking– is it possible to layer Pure Ice Heart Breaker with another polish to create a dupe? Let’s find out!

Index: Rimmel Mania
Middle: OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaher
Ring: NYX Jungle
Pinkie: OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaher

I’ve always heard NYX Jungle was a decent dupe for Rimmel Mania, but I find my OPI Ski Teal We Drop and Pure Ice Heart Breaker combo looks a little closer. NYX Jungle is too golden green.

So, with that in mind I changed things up and tried out a couple more layering combos:

Index: Rimmel Mania
Middle: Revlon Midnight Affair and Pure Ice Heart Breaker
Ring: Finger Paints Avante Garde Green and Pure Ice Heart Breaker
Pinkie: ORLY Meet Me Under the Mistletoe and Pure Ice Heart Breaker

Revlon Midnight Affair and Pure Ice Heart Breaker comes the closest, matching the darker polish colour, but it doesn’t match how freaking glowy and bright Rimmel Mania truly is! I’m still on the hunt for a fine dupe, but Rimmel Mania is one unique polish!

Clarins 230 + Femme Fatale Suspended Starlight = LOVE.

clarins_starlight001

In an attempt to buy less polish (and omg it’s working! I bought one bottle last month but it hasn’t arrived yet. A coworker gave me a polish on Monday that she didn’t care for, but I didn’t spend anything on it… this is getting SCARY) I’m getting more and more into layering random polishes.

clarins_starlight002

This started with two coats of Sephora My Favorite Jeans (kind of like Revlon Royal but less squishy-looking). I then added a coat of Clarins 230 (a.k.a. UNICORN PEE!) and ended with a coat of Femme Fatale Suspended Starlight. I LOVE Suspended Starlight, but the bummer thing is that you really have to fish for those star and moon pieces. I think this may either be discontinued or just out of stock on Llarowe, but I’d recommend picking up Revlon Celestial FX if you’re keen on recreating this manicure. I bought Celestial for my mom and did her nails with that a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t have to go fishin’ for glitter.

clarins_starlight003

For some reason, and I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not having luck with lighting today or maybe the blue glitter is diminishing it, but I can’t seem to get the green shift of Clarins 230 to show up. I prefer the glowy red shift anyway, and think it looks awesome with the stars over the blue background. SO GLOWY.

What do you think? What’s your favorurite way to wear unicorn pee polishes?

Kleancolor Nail Polish Swatches & Stamping!

kc

Big post today for you guys! I got a few Kleancolor polishes from My Wholesale Fashion.

kc001

First up is KleanColor Nail Polish K165 Metallic Sapphire. I pretty much have the same review for the three metallic polishes I tried out. I was impressed with how opaque they were– they’re all two coats, but were opaque in one. I like to do an extra coat because sometimes those big photos like to highlight all the flaws, jeez. I also found that these Kleancolor polishes dry very quickly! SUPER impressed! Two downsides though: I found these polishes stain and they smell very strong. I can get over the smell, that’s not an issue for me, but the staining was kind of a bummer. Also something I can get over because I always have my nails painted, but just a warning!

kc003

This is KleanColor Nail Polish K160 Metallic Orange.

kc005

And this is KleanColor Nail Polish K162 Metallic Yellow.

yarn001

The stamping abilities of these metallic polishes totally makes up for the staining, though! My stamper did get stained, so be warned, but I haven’t found it to be problematic. You usually have to be careful with stamping polishes because they will drag with topcoat, even when you think they’re dry. I applied topcoat over this almost immediately and there was NO dragging. That is amazing! And if you’re wondering, that’s the Kleancolor Metallic Sapphire over Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Brisk Blue and Vivid Lacquer nail plate VL 004.

kc002

The glitters I received were also great. This one is KleanColor Nail Polish K169 Grand Finale and it reminds me of those Revlon Street Wear polishes from the 90s. I absolutely love this polish! Silver holo bar glitter?! YES! I don’t have any bar glitter in my current collection, but I remember rocking it in the 90s! This is one coat over Kleancolor Metallic Sapphire.

kc004

Next up is KleanColor Nail Polish K195 Blind Date. This was also impressive– usually I find with chunky glitters like this, I have to “go fishing” to get the pieces of glitter that I want. Not the case here! This is two coats over Kleancolor Metallic Orange.

kc006

This might possibly be my favourite from the lot– KleanColor Nail Polish K191 Blue Eyed Girl. This is a blue jelly polish with large hex and small round glitters. This is two coats, which shows so much dimension! It’s like looking into a pond… a pond of glitter.

I Suffer From Nail Pattern Boldness…

npb_texas001

Isn’t that the greatest name for a nail polish– Nail Pattern Boldness? Maybe I’m too easily amused… at any rate, this is Nail Pattern Boldness Texas Tea, a polish exclusive to Llarowe, a fabulous polish distributor that I send a lot of my money off to.

npb_texas002

Texas Tea has black and holo glitters in a clear base, which reminds me of Models Own Mixed Up. EXCEPT, Texas Tea has blue and purple hex glitters buried in there, giving it a nicer blue look. This is one coat over a shiny medium blue– Lasenza Fiji Fantasy.

I think next time I might try this over a darker blue polish. What would you pair Texas Tea with?

Duochrome Flakies over Royal Blue

pritiblueflakies001

I’m really into trying to find different colour combinations to do in my stash. Maybe this is what has prevented me from buying any polish in March and so far in April (this is getting scary!)

pritiblueflakies002

This is one coat of Priti NYC Canterbury Bells (yup, a one-coater, I love that!) with a coat of flakies over top. My current favourite flakie top coat? Essie Shine of the Times. I think this one is permanent now, considering I still see it at my local drug store. Woohoo! Essie Shine of the Times has a strong orange-green colour shift that you can see in the above photos.

What are some of your favourite ways to wear flakies? Putting a matte coat over them really kicks it up! I like finding different colours to wear flakies with. When I first got into flakies I’d only wear them over black. I’m glad I branched out because I think this looks great over blue!

Quickie Konad: Stars and… Cosmos!

cosmosstars001

I know you’ve seen all this before– this polish, this stamp, and this stamping polish. But you know what? All three of these things are my favourites, so you get subjected to them again;) This started with two coats of Picture Polish Cosmos, an amazing cerulean blue with a slight hint ‘o holo and some mini flakies. I wanted to amp it up and what better way to do that to a polish named Cosmos than with a Fauxnad stamping of stars!

cosmosstars002

This is Bundle Monster plate BM21 and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri polish in Silver Sweep. I love Silver Sweep, it’s one of my all-time favourite Insta-Dri polishes, which means it will probably be discontinued if it hasn’t been already. Silver Sweep stamps so clean that it blows my mind. This polish works better than the Konad special polishes. WHAT.

Another quickie. What do you think? Do you use Insta-Dris for stamping? What are some of your favourite stamping polishes?

Quickie Konad Manicure: Blue Leopard Nails

blueleopard

Recently, I picked up OPI No Room for the Blues. It’s a lovely medium blue (I was hoping for a lighter colour when I bought it, damn you fluorescent beauty shop lighting!) but it’s still an awesome colour that I’m glad I picked up! I was excited to use it, so onto my nails it went almost immediately. But then… what do I pair it with? I can’t just wear a colour with no pizazz over it, can I?

Welp, the answer was no. So using Konad plate M57 and a fauxnad plate from Ninja Polish, K01 for the accent nail with some Konad Special Black polish, I came up with this! I love how the leopard spots look over the bright blue. The claw marks with the leopard spots shining through made for a nice accent.

Icy Blue Snowflake Manicure… take two!

gb_snow001

I wanted to do another take on the snowflake manicure that I so love, and while picking out polishes I remembered a combo Ashesela from Art Evolve did a while back– Girly Bits Arctic Sunrise with Girly Bits Hocus Pocus on top. It’s a gorgeous combo!

gb_snow002

After that awesome combo was thrown down (and please excuse my inability to capture any of the holo goodness– there was lots of it, but we’ve been suffering from some cloudy snowy weather lately) I stamped on the full nail snowflake pattern from Bundle Monster plate BM-323 with Konad Special White polish.

I would have never thought to try this combo, so mad props to Ashesela! What are some of your favourite unexpected layering polishes?

Picture Polish Cosmos swatch & bottle comparisons

cosmos

I can’t get enough blue nail polish. Ever. So when I saw that Picture Polish was releasing a new blue polish, I had to have it– especially because it was the most gorgeous blue ever! This is two coats of Cosmos. This polish is very opaque and super fast drying. I’m always impressed with Picture Polish polishes.

You see, in all my searching for an Essie Starry Starry Night dupe, what I’m really searching for is a dupe (or a few more bottles of) Bonne Bell NailGear in Scandal. Scandal is a deep cerulean blue with medium blue and silver glitter. And holy hell is it the best nail polish ever! And when I saw Picture Polish Cosmos, I thought it might be close. Instead of the glitter, there’s a scattered holo effect going on.

cosmos_bottle

I haven’t done a comparison swatch yet, but I compared the bottles. I saw some people talking about Cosmos and Orbit being close, but that definitely isn’t the case. If anything, Cosmos is as close of a dupe to Scandal as I’ve found. If you want to see swatches of Orbit though, you can click here. From what I can tell, Orbit is a pretty nice SSN dupe.

Colour Changing Nail Polish PLUS Awesome Deals!

bp004

Colour changing or mood nail polish is a fun concept, but oftentimes the colour change isn’t very strong. I’ve used a couple from Claire’s and you can barely notice a tint of difference. This polish, though, THIS is the real deal. This is Yin Mood Color Changing Nail Polish in 07, available from Born Pretty Store.

bp002

When your hands are cold, the polish is a really nice mid-purple creme.

bp003

When your hands are warm (or if you run them under warm water and don’t dry them properly like I did, haha!) it turns a light baby blue.

bp001

As you can see, the change is quite stark! The other mood polishes I’ve seen before change from mid-tone blue to almost a light blue. Not a big difference at all. This isn’t just a shade change– it’s a whole colour change!

Overall this polish has a strong colour change and I was really impressed! This applied smoothly and dried quickly. The only downside I found was that it seems to react with fast-drying topcoats. I used Priti NYC Speed Dry Top Coat and found a few hours later that the topcoat was flaking off– not the polish underneath, just the top coat. I tried it again with a non fast-dry topcoat (Nailene Acrylic Strong) and it was fine. Just a bit of caution! But the polish dries so fast on its own that it doesn’t need a fast-drying topcoat.

I’d love to try more of these polishes, wouldn’t you? Well, you’re in luck because Born Pretty Store has some great deals and discounts going on right now!
