Duochrome Flakies over Royal Blue

pritiblueflakies001

I’m really into trying to find different colour combinations to do in my stash. Maybe this is what has prevented me from buying any polish in March and so far in April (this is getting scary!)

pritiblueflakies002

This is one coat of Priti NYC Canterbury Bells (yup, a one-coater, I love that!) with a coat of flakies over top. My current favourite flakie top coat? Essie Shine of the Times. I think this one is permanent now, considering I still see it at my local drug store. Woohoo! Essie Shine of the Times has a strong orange-green colour shift that you can see in the above photos.

What are some of your favourite ways to wear flakies? Putting a matte coat over them really kicks it up! I like finding different colours to wear flakies with. When I first got into flakies I’d only wear them over black. I’m glad I branched out because I think this looks great over blue!

Matte Burgundy and Flakie Goodness!

I haven’t done up any flakies or matte manicures for a while, which is a shame because flakies and matte polishes is one of my favourite nail polish trends! This is two coats of OPI Diva of Geneva and one coat of Essie Shine of the Times followed by a coat of China Glaze Matte Magic.

I love how Shine of the Time shifts from orange to gold to green. And while I do enjoy these types of flakies over black polishes, reds and burgundys really seem to make the colour shift pop more. The dulling effect of the matte polish makes the flakies stand out even more– it lightens the polish and then BAM! It’s like a bonfire on my nails!

What are your favourite polishes to top with flakies? What are some of your favourite ways to wear matte polish?

Quickie Fauxnad: Peacocky Nails

Another quickie for you today! This is two coats of OPI Swimsuit… Nailed It! topped with a coat of Inglot 203. OPI Swimsuit… Nailed It! is a gorgeous shimmery blue. I’m so in love with this polish! It came out a while ago, but I picked it up as some buy two get one free deals at a local beauty supply shop. The Inglot 203 flakie polish is spectacular– amazing green flakies and it is jam-packed!

After all that polish, I used Soulstice Spa Venice to stamp out a peacock pattern with Bundle Monster plate BM-212. I felt it still needed a little something extra, so I used a nail dotting tool and added some Soulstice Spa Montreal to make it even more peacock-y!

A Unicorn Peed on my Nails! – Girly Bits Shift Happens and Comparisons

Here is the final installment of my Girly Bits review (well, for now. I’m sure more orders will be placed when Pam’s shop is open again). I’ve left the best for last—Shift Happens is the ultimate multichrome polish, a Clarins 230 dupe, a.k.a. Unicorn Pee!

This is two coats of Girly Bits Shift Happens over Finger Paints Be A Pal-ette (a shimmery dark purple).

Unicorn Pee picspam!

Since I have other unicorn pee polishes, I did a comparison of them on my rarely seen left hand.

These are two coats each over Finger Paints Be A Pal-ette.
Index: Girl Bits Shift Happens
Middle: Clarins 230
Ring: Max Factor Fantasy Fire
Pinkie: Nfu-Oh 51

Layered on top of a dark colour, the first three polishes aren’t really distinguishable. Nfu-Oh 51 looks different of course because of the flakies. Girly Bits Shift Happens and Clarins 230 are the most similar, with Max Factor Fantasy Fire having a purple base instead of a red one.

Overall: Girly Bits Shift Happens is your best bet for unicorn pee right now, just make sure you keep up with her to find out when her shop re-opens. At $11.50, it’s also the cheapest of the unicorn pees. Clarins 230 can run you as much as $60, and Max Factor Fantasy Fire usually goes for around $15 for the tiniest of bottles. Nfu-Oh 51 isn’t super expensive, but it also has those flakies which does make it different.

Easy-peasy Easter/Spring Manicure

Here’s a quick and easy Easter or spring manicure for you guys today!

Ingredients!
Index and Pinkie: Two coats Avon Luxe Lavender, one coat Essie Shine of the Times
Middle and Ring: Two coats China Glaze For Audrey, one coat Essie Shine of the Times

This definitely reminds me of those sparkly glitter eggs my best friend and I made when we were kids.

What do you think? What will you be wearing on your nails for Easter?

Flakies + Matte Top Coat = Magic!

How can flakies get any better? By adding a matte top coat, of course! This was from my Flakie Comparisons post from the other day.

As a reminder, these are all over black (Nicole by OPI Razzle Dazzler).
Index finger: Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure (one coat)
Middle finger: Essie Shine of the Times (one coat)
Ring finger: Maybelline Colorama Ruby Rays (one coat)
Pinkie finger: Barielle Elle’s Spell (one coat)
Aaaand a coat of China Glaze Matte Magic!

Still diggin’ Essie Shine of the Times the best. The addition of the matte top coat really brought out some blue in those flakies. What do you guys think?

Flakie Polish Comparison

Hollie-Marie contacted me on Twitter asking for a flakie comparison swatch of Ruby Rays (as seen in this post here) and Essie Shine of the Times– one of her favourite polishes. So, here we go!

These are all over black (Nicole by OPI Razzle Dazzler).
Index finger: Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure (one coat)
Middle finger: Essie Shine of the Times (one coat)
Ring finger: Maybelline Colorama Ruby Rays (one coat)
Pinkie finger: Barielle Elle’s Spell (one coat… hey, it’s a flakie I hadn’t tried yet any I had another finger;))

As you can seen, Hidden Treasure and Shine of the Times are the densest by far. I’d say those two are almost dupes, but Shine of the Times has an extra shimmer/small glitter particle mixed in with the flakies. It’s hard to see when you’re not looking for it, but it’s especially noticeable in the bottle. Of the two, I actually prefer the Essie polish just for that extra shine!

As for how it compares to Ruby Rays– well, the Colorama polish isn’t as densely packed with flakies. It’s all the same type of opalescent flakie particles, though, you can tell with the colour shifting from orange to green. And Barielle’s Elle’s Spell, I think the red base hinders the potential of the flakies, but still, not a bad polish. I’ll have to try it over a red base next time.

The verdict? If you don’t have any of these, I’d suggest going with Essie Shine of the Times. It’s probably the easiest one to find right now, too. I just got mine from Nail Polish Canada. I’ve seen them in the flyer for Shoppers Drug Mart, but haven’t seen a display of them. Pretty sure the collection should be available at Ulta still, as well as beauty supply stores.

What are your favourite flakies?

St. George? More like St. Ozotic!

I knew St. George had some more life to give, so I added a few more polishes on top of him. Why not! This is one coat of A-england St. George, followed by a coat of Ozotic 505. Here’s some picspam of the colour shift:

And just because that wasn’t enough, I added a blue flakie– two coats of Nails Inc. The Old Vic Overglaze Top Coat:

Phew!

What’s your favourite polish to layer with St. George? Or do you prefer him nekkid?

Maybelline Colorama Give Me The Chills!

Here’s an unusual polish for you today– Colorama Give Me the Chills. I’ve never seen anything like this one– it’s like… ghost bar glitter or something. It kind of makes the base polish look like it has a million glowy scratches in it… it’s very… unusual!

This is two coats of Maybelline Colorama Give Me the Chills over black (Nicole by OPI Razzle Dazzler). On my ring finger is two coats of Maybelline Colorama Ruby Rays (a Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure dupe). I wanted to compare Ruby Rays and Give Me the Chills. As you can see, Give Me the Chills has that same orange glowyness. You can sort of see a hint of colour shift as it hits a yellow-green, but it’s not as prominent as Ruby Rays.

One downside of Give Me the Chills is that the little fibers can hang off your nail and look all fuzzy. I had to go over my tips with a nail file to get rid of all the little overhang fibers.

What do you think of Give Me the Chills? Have you seen anything like it before? I want to grab more of these Colorama top coats, they’re very cool. I think they may have been the first brand to do flakies? Anyone happen to know?

Mermaid Tail Nails

I picked out a few polishes from my nail polish racks that I wanted to see together– all different textures (holo, glitter, and flakies!) The end result looks sort of mermaid-y to me. What do you think?

I started with two coats of China Glaze DV8, followed by three coats of Nicole by OPI Nicole… Spotted! I wish Nicole… Spotted! was a denser glitter. I was hoping that would take care of my China Glaze Atlantis lemming, but now I’m not so sure. On top of the glitter, I added a coat of Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure.

Here’s a crappy indoors shot so you can see some of the green-ness that really comes out under artificial light.
