The Quest for a Rimmel Mania Dupe

The Scholarly Nail just posted Pure Ice Heartbreaker over Revlon Royal, which reminded me that I’ve had this sitting in my drafts for a while! So without further adieu… this manicure started out as OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaker on top. After doing that up, I noticed it had that special glowy look reminiscent of Rimmel Mania, a gorgeous deep green-blue duochrome. This got me thinking– is it possible to layer Pure Ice Heart Breaker with another polish to create a dupe? Let’s find out!

Index: Rimmel Mania
Middle: OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaher
Ring: NYX Jungle
Pinkie: OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaher

I’ve always heard NYX Jungle was a decent dupe for Rimmel Mania, but I find my OPI Ski Teal We Drop and Pure Ice Heart Breaker combo looks a little closer. NYX Jungle is too golden green.

So, with that in mind I changed things up and tried out a couple more layering combos:

Index: Rimmel Mania
Middle: Revlon Midnight Affair and Pure Ice Heart Breaker
Ring: Finger Paints Avante Garde Green and Pure Ice Heart Breaker
Pinkie: ORLY Meet Me Under the Mistletoe and Pure Ice Heart Breaker

Revlon Midnight Affair and Pure Ice Heart Breaker comes the closest, matching the darker polish colour, but it doesn’t match how freaking glowy and bright Rimmel Mania truly is! I’m still on the hunt for a fine dupe, but Rimmel Mania is one unique polish!

Avante Garde Green Holo

One of my favourite polishes is Glitter Gal H707 Silver Glitter Gal 3D Holographic– a great holographic topcoat that turns any polish into a holo. Today I holo-ifyed Finger Paints Avante Garde Green, a gorgeous and rich dark green.

This is one coat of Glitter Gal H707 Silver Glitter Gal 3D Holographic over two coats of Finger Paints Avante Garde Green. My only complaint is that the Glitter Gal polish is too densely packed with holo goodness. I was hoping a little more of Avante Garde Green would show through. Still a neat colour.

What are your favourite holo topcoats? I love the effect Glitter Gal gives, but I need something that will let the original colours show a little more!

Clarins 230 – unicorn pee dupe talk

Ah yes, the infamous Clarins 230– that expensive and illusive unicorn pee. Clarins 230 is a unique colour-shifting polish that hits every colour of the rainbow. But, like I said, it can get expensive. You may end up finding one cheaper in a blog sale like I did, or maybe you’ll get lucky and find someone who wants to swap it. But in all likeliness, you’re slapping down some major cash (considering it’s just a bottle of polish) on this baby. And that ain’t right. So let’s get some photos out of the way first so we can talk about dupes!

On all but my ring fingers, I have three coats of Finger Paints Be a Pal-ette and one coat of Clarins 230. I find that a dark purple really brings out the different colours of 230, but others like using a royal blue (Revlon Royal, in fact!) as well.

On my ring finger is one coat of Nfu-Oh 51 over three coats of Finger Paints Be a Pal-ette. Nfu-Oh 51 has the same type of colour-shifting pigment as Clarins 230, except this is a flakie. And it’s much cheaper– you can get your hands on a bottle of it for $12.50 from Fabulous Street

Here’s a side-by-side with the bottles. Look at those rainbows!

Other dupes that have come out include:
Liquid Euphoria – Bliss (good luck finding this one!)
Urban Decay – Toxin (again… good luck!)
OPI – Movin’ Out
Beyu – 209 (there’s a good and a dud version of this, so be careful when tracking this one down!)
Milani – Totally Cool (this seems like a weaker version of Clarins 230, but along the same idea. Not sure on in-store availability, but I see it’s in stock over at Cherry Culture.)
KleanColor – 230 Chunky Holo Fuschia (love that it’s numbered 230! This is like Clarins 230 in a chunky glitter form)

If you’re into frankening, there is a Franken Clarins 230 recipe, but that involves another hard-to-find polish– Maybelline Colorama #40 Frosty Pink. And you can’t just skip out on Frosty Pink, because that’s the key ingredient that gives the franken its colour-shifting properties.

There is some good news, though! There are two Clarins 230 dupes available at an affordable price!

Max Factor – Fantasy Fire (check out this post over on Cute-tickle nails for some awesome swatches!) – available in the U.K., not so sure about here in Canada or in the U.S.
Girly Bits – Shift Happens (Pam will have these available in February!) The polish will be available here and at Llarowe

With the Max Factor polish coming out especially, I’m wondering if we could see a resurgence in these sorts of magical Unicorn Pee-type colours. We had crackle polish last year, flakie polish this year (and it looks like magnetic polishes again this year), wouldn’t it be great if polish companies got it together to release unicorn pee as the newest trend? Oooh dear wallet… you’re in for a beating. I don’t care about dupes, I’ll buy them all!

Do you have any other dupes? Know where I can get Max Factor Fantasy Fire in Canada? Have a Clarins 230 recipe of your own? Leave me some Clarins 230 love in the comments– I’m so in love with this polish and love talking about it… clearly, haha!

Lovely Rose Patina from Finger Paints

I don’t wear pink polish very often, but one of my favourite pinks is Rose Patina from Finger Paints, available at Sally’s. I originally picked this up because they didn’t have China Glaze Strawberry Fields and I wanted a pink with a gold pearly finish to it. Well, I ended up picking up Strawberry Fields later and they are not alike at all… and I ended up liking Rose Patina more anyway!

This is three coats of Rose Patina with a coat of OPI Top Coat. It’s kind of sheer, but dries quickly and smoothly. There’s still some VNL, but I like the colour enough that I don’t mind. It’s a bit pinker IRL, but the camera wasn’t picking up on it. The photo does show the glowy gold pearl it has, though!

On the ring finger accent nail is a stamp from Konad plat M83 using Konad’s Special Black polish.

Awesome FingerPaints Sale!

That’s right– Sally’s is having an awesome buy 2 get 1 free promo online on their FingerPaints brand of polishes! This is Sally’s own line. I was skeptical at first, but now it’s one of my favourite lines. I haven’t had a chance to get out the new colours yet, but they look amazing! Offer expires July 31, 2011. Happy shopping!:)

Teal Comparisons

The last time I did a comparison (with navy blues), I ended up finding two polishes I could remove from my stash and put on my swap list. This time, I’m setting out to do the same thing with teal.

Index finger = Rimmel’s Green with Envy, middle finger = Finger Paints’ Art Dealer Teal-er, ring finger = Sephora by OPI’s Mermaid to Order, and pinkie is Maybelline Colorama’s #22 Jelly Bean.

First up is Rimmel’s Green with Envy. I originally picked this up when I was lemming for Rimmel’s Mania (a lemming I eventually fulfilled). It looks nothing like Mania. I was just kind of hoping. It does look like the rest of the drugstore-brand offerings of teal. I’ve been tempted to pick up similar colours from Revlon and in the Sally Hansen Insta-Dri line, but I’ve been able to stop myself. Of the four swatched, this is the most vibrant and the fastest drying. This is three coats with one coat Nailene Acrylic Strong top coat.

Next is Finger Paints’ Art Dealer Teal-er. This is the second-most vibrant of the bunch, but bluer than Rimmel. It took the longest to dry, but I think it’s my favourite. It has a beautiful and subtle shimmer to it. This is three coats with one coat Nailene Acrylic Strong top coat.

The next polish is Sephora by OPI’s Mermaid to Order. I only bought this because I wanted Teal We Meet Again and they didn’t have it in store. I still plan on purchasing Teal We Meet Again, if I ever find it. This is kind of meh. I find it dull even though it’s chrome-like finish. Applied a bit streaky, too. This is three coats with one coat Nailene Acrylic Strong top coat.

Lastly is an old Maybelline Colorama polish in #22 Jelly Bean. From what I understand, it’s a possibly rare UK-only release. I picked it up cheap on a blog sale a while back. This one is also a bit dull and dries to a satin finish. My bottle is a bit gunky, so it didn’t have the best application, but you can get an idea of the colour at least. This is three coats with one coat Nailene Acrylic Strong top coat.

Overall: I’d stick with Finger Paints’ Art Dealer Teal-er. It dries slowly, but it’s gorgeous. The Rimmel one is alright, but I personally like the bluer-ness (oh wow, haha!) of Art Dealer better. The last two I’d pass on completely. Looks like I found three more polishes to swap away!
