The Quest for a Rimmel Mania Dupe

The Scholarly Nail just posted Pure Ice Heartbreaker over Revlon Royal, which reminded me that I’ve had this sitting in my drafts for a while! So without further adieu… this manicure started out as OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaker on top. After doing that up, I noticed it had that special glowy look reminiscent of Rimmel Mania, a gorgeous deep green-blue duochrome. This got me thinking– is it possible to layer Pure Ice Heart Breaker with another polish to create a dupe? Let’s find out!

Index: Rimmel Mania
Middle: OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaher
Ring: NYX Jungle
Pinkie: OPI Ski Teal We Drop with Pure Ice Heart Breaher

I’ve always heard NYX Jungle was a decent dupe for Rimmel Mania, but I find my OPI Ski Teal We Drop and Pure Ice Heart Breaker combo looks a little closer. NYX Jungle is too golden green.

So, with that in mind I changed things up and tried out a couple more layering combos:

Index: Rimmel Mania
Middle: Revlon Midnight Affair and Pure Ice Heart Breaker
Ring: Finger Paints Avante Garde Green and Pure Ice Heart Breaker
Pinkie: ORLY Meet Me Under the Mistletoe and Pure Ice Heart Breaker

Revlon Midnight Affair and Pure Ice Heart Breaker comes the closest, matching the darker polish colour, but it doesn’t match how freaking glowy and bright Rimmel Mania truly is! I’m still on the hunt for a fine dupe, but Rimmel Mania is one unique polish!

Color Club Port-Folio duochrome Fauxnad manicure

port001

Over the last year or so, we saw major brands releasing duochrome polishes– finally! Some of them… well, “meh” comes to mind in describing them. Not quite as bright or awesome as a Sally Hansen Nail Prisms. There was one that really stood out– not only does it have a strong colour change, but it’s actually unique! I’m talking about Color Club Port-Folio, of course! This is two coats with some stampage on top!

port002

Color Club Port-Folio shifts from a gorgeous purple to a deep mint green. Of all the duochromes I own and have seen, I’ve never come across one quite like this. I didn’t even need to layer it over black to make this baby pop!

port003

And of course I can’t just wear plain polish. Over top is a fauxnad plate I picked up over at Ninja Polish, K01. This is stamped with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Silver Sweep, which is one of my all-time favourite stamping polishes.

What do you think of Port-Folio? Do you own it? How do you like to wear it?

Sally Hansen Nail Prisms – Cinnabar & Quick Update

That’s right, it’s time once again for more Sally Hansen Nail Prisms goodness! Today I have two coats of Sally Hansen Nail Prisms Cinnabar over black.

Sally Hansen Nail Prisms Cinnabar shifts from purple to olive green. I was hoping I’d see more of a peach in it too, but it didn’t come out over black. I think I’ll need to try this one over white to see what happens. I’m guessing more of a peach-purple duochrome.

I was a little disappointed in this one, just because it reminds me so much of a darker version of Emerald Amethyst. Definitely going to need to try this one over different colours!

Still a beautiful colour, so I really can’t complain! What do you think?

And in other news, I’ve kind of been neglecting my nail polish blog a bit because I’ve been so busy with my 80s & 90s nostalgia site– we recently changed the name from Soap in the Bathroom (which makes no sense, but was a domain my friend and I had had for 15 years) to Pop Rewind (which makes 82% more sense). So if you’re a child of the 80s and 90s and want to re-live some of that, check out Pop Rewind!

Christmas Candy Cane Nails

Getting sick of the holidays yet? I sure hope not because I have another holiday-themed manicure for you:)

This obnoxious manicure alternates between China Glaze Ruby Pumps and ORLY Meet Me Under The Mistletoe. Over that I stamped on Bundle Monster plate BM20. The full nail stamps in the first Bundle Monster release are kind of slender– which is saying a lot because my nails/fingers aren’t all that big! But this sure beats trying to fiddle around with tape. I’ve tried everything and I still can’t get manicure tape to work for me. When I did a French Manicure for my wedding a couple years ago, I just free handed it with a Kiss nail art polish. No one was the wiser, muahahah! Still, I wish I could use manicure tape. I’ve tried many, and I suck at all of them.

What are you wearing on your nails this holiday season? Do you suck at nail tape, too? Leave a comment and help me feel better about myself, haha!;)

Festive Holiday Nails

Here’s a simple manicure that’s perfect for the holidays! This is two coats of Soulstice Spa Venice, which is a gorgeous metallic champagne gold colour. This goes on like buttah! Actually, all of the Soulstice Spa polishes I’ve tried have gone on like buttah. Gorgeous. Anyway, on top of that I put on two coats of Lynnderella Happy HoloDaze. Happy HoloDaze has red and green round and square bits of glitter in varying sizes, as well as larger holographic silver glitter pieces, all in a clear base. If you’re lucky enough (which I was not), you may even get a piece of holo silver bar glitter. I wish this was more dense (er, denser?) with the bar glitter. Maybe it’s just because I’ve been loving bar glitter so much lately (or visiting The Scholarly Nail and Polished Claws Up so often lately… either way… moar bar glittah!

What colours do you like to wear on your nails during the holidays?

Quickie Konad: Sephora Moody Woman!

Another quickie for you guys– this is two coats of Sephora Collection Moody Woman, an awesome blue green metallic duochrome, stamped with Konad plate M64 and Konad Special Black polish.

This is my first time using the M64 plate and I really like this design. Kind of reminds me of those henna tattoos. What do you think?

Hallowe’en Nail Art Challenge – Spider!

I wanted to make the spider manicure different from my spiderweb manicure, but it’s kind of hard! Hopefully this is different enough! I found a new favourite layering combo out of the deal though! This is Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Vigorous Violet with Kleancolor 232 Chunky Holo Clover. The glitter goes from green to orange and looks pretty fabulous on top of purple. Fits the Hallowe’en theme pretty well, too!

Anyway, so on top of that above combo, I stamped on some spiderwebs from the Bundle Monster BM13 plate with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Silver Sweep. I then added in a spider body on my middle finger and extended some spider legs across to the nails next to it. I used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Whirlwind White and China Glaze Ruby Pumps for the spider’s evil eyes.

…can you tell I love those Sally Hansen Insta-Dri polishes? Not the most unique polishes, but they’re quick drying, great for nail art, and many of them are superb stamping polishes. End commercial.

And here’s Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Vigorous Violet with Kleancolor 232 Chunky Holo Clover on it’s own:

Hallowe’en Nail Art Challenge – Tombstone!

I had a lot of fun with this one! Here is my take on a tombstone manicure– each nail is a different tombstone. I started with China Glaze Recycle as the base, then added in details with a black polish and toothpicks. On the tips, I sponged on some green polish (China Glaze Four Leaf Clover mixed with Nicole by OPI Daffy Dill), except on my middle finger where I sponged on brown (I didn’t have a non glitter/frosty brown so I mixed those two greens with a bit of red). The zombie arm on my middle finger is Nicole by OPI Daffy Dill with a little surprise over top…

That’s right– a little glow in the dark polish from Sally’s made this zombie arm pop!

Girly Bits Hallowe’en Polish in Monster Mash

Here is it– the final polish I’ve swatched for the Girly Bits Hallowe’en collection! This one is two coats of Monster Mash over a green base (China Glaze Four Leaf Clover). Monster Mash is a cornucopia of green, gold, and black glitters of all different sizes in a clear base. Green glitter has been done before, but as always, Girly Bits adds something a little special to the mix– the addition of black glitter in this polish makes this really stand out!

You can purchase Girly Bits from the following e-tailers: Harlow & Co, Llarowe, Overall Beauty, and Mei Mei’s Signatures. The Girly Bits store is currently sold out of this shade, but check back and check out her other polishes!

Hallowe’en Nail Art Challenge – Hallowe’en Pumpkin

It’s October first, which means two things– my husband is bringing up my Hallowe’en decorations from the basement finally AND it’s time for the Hallowe’en Nail Art Challenge!

October 1′s manicure is Hallowe’en Pumpkin. I started with painting my nails orange (Inglot 978) and stamping a pumpkin from Bundle Monster plate BM-222 with Konad Special Polish in Black. I added vines to my non-accent nails with a small brush and China Glaze Fortune Teller. I then dotted on Girly Bits Monster Mash and Crunchy Leaves to represent some glittery falling fall leaves.
