Flakie Polish Comparison

Hollie-Marie contacted me on Twitter asking for a flakie comparison swatch of Ruby Rays (as seen in this post here) and Essie Shine of the Times– one of her favourite polishes. So, here we go!

These are all over black (Nicole by OPI Razzle Dazzler).
Index finger: Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure (one coat)
Middle finger: Essie Shine of the Times (one coat)
Ring finger: Maybelline Colorama Ruby Rays (one coat)
Pinkie finger: Barielle Elle’s Spell (one coat… hey, it’s a flakie I hadn’t tried yet any I had another finger;))

As you can seen, Hidden Treasure and Shine of the Times are the densest by far. I’d say those two are almost dupes, but Shine of the Times has an extra shimmer/small glitter particle mixed in with the flakies. It’s hard to see when you’re not looking for it, but it’s especially noticeable in the bottle. Of the two, I actually prefer the Essie polish just for that extra shine!

As for how it compares to Ruby Rays– well, the Colorama polish isn’t as densely packed with flakies. It’s all the same type of opalescent flakie particles, though, you can tell with the colour shifting from orange to green. And Barielle’s Elle’s Spell, I think the red base hinders the potential of the flakies, but still, not a bad polish. I’ll have to try it over a red base next time.

The verdict? If you don’t have any of these, I’d suggest going with Essie Shine of the Times. It’s probably the easiest one to find right now, too. I just got mine from Nail Polish Canada. I’ve seen them in the flyer for Shoppers Drug Mart, but haven’t seen a display of them. Pretty sure the collection should be available at Ulta still, as well as beauty supply stores.

What are your favourite flakies?

  1. Thank you so much Lindsey for doing the compare. So many gold flexies have recently come out and I see a few more companies jumping on the bandwagon and so it is nice to see a side by side compare, if not only for effect but price point. 😀

  2. Hidden Treasure was my first flakie, so it’ll always have a special place in my stash. Finger Paints Twisted is my favorite of the newer crop to come out.
